Doing What's Right vs Having the Right
“Choose what’s right over what you have a right to do.” This fits right in with one of the fundamental values of my real estate company. Seems simple enough, right? Just do the right thing. How hard can it be? As I was thinking through this further, it seems we have a problem, wondering what “doing right” means. It seems “right” has become relative and we constantly hear people from all walks of life, justifying the “rightness” of any particular subject, deed, statement or whatever. This is what happens in the absence of an absolute standard. My dad, the minister, used to say (paraphrased) “anyone can go along with the crowd, but it takes real strong person to stand for what is right”. Just because it’s legal doesn’t make it right. Let that sink in.
