Who's Watching You?
I started thinking about one of the first things I learned in the real estate business. People don’t do what’s “expected”, they do what’s “inspected”. I knew this little spy under my dash was inspecting every move I made behind the wheel. Not only was it inspecting me, it is in constant report and feedback mode. This leads me to accountability and the need we all have for it. Being self employed, I need someone to help keep me focused so that I’m working toward my goals and aspirations consistently. Many come into real estate being sick and tired of having a “boss”. The big reveal is pretty soon we realize we need a “boss”, not for them to lord power over us, but to help us keep ourselves accountable to OUR goals and aspirations. We need someone who will keep us responsible to do what WE decide we need to do. Who do you have watching you? Who’s keeping you focused on YOUR goals? Accountability partners should never have an ego. It means you have to focus your contribution on making the other person better.
I’m reminded of a song from the ’80’s by Rockwell with Michael Jackson, “Somebody’s Watching Me”. Whether we like it or not, there’s always someone watching us, shouldn’t we be the one deciding who that is?
